This Month’s IN THE LIFE titled “The State of Equality”

September’s IN THE LIFE addresses the political side of inequality by taking a look at Barack Obama’s presidency, and the lack of change that was promised on The Defense of Marriage Act, The Employee Non-Discrimination Act, and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” This episode also features and  interview with New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and two service members who were discharged under the discriminatory policy.

The segment titled “The Politics of Progress” spotlights Barack Obama’s involvement in LGBT equality and whether or not he will fulfill his promises to advance the political movement towards full equality. While Obama has signed memorandums to expand the benefits of same-sex partners as well as broadening federal protections to the victims of hate crimes, he has not yet fulfilled many of the promises that won him the LGBT community’s vote in 2008. As a result of the frustration of many in the LGBT community, new equal rights groups are developing new tactics to push forward towards equal rights.

This month's IN THE LIFE addresses "The State of Equality"

In the final segment, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D) interviews David Hall, a former cadet in the US Air Force, and Julianne Sohn, a former Marine officer. Both David and Julianne were discharged under the discriminatory policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” which continues to discharge qualified and invested LGBT service members.

This month’s IN THE LIFE began airing on September 1st. To find out where it is on in your area or to download the episode, go to the IN THE LIFE website.

NFL Hall of Famer Makes Anti-Gay Joke On-Air

Former NFL superstar and current Pro Football Weekly TV co-host Dan Hampton made two serious fumbles on this week’s show. He has apologized for one of them.

Hampton said that when the Vikings meet the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints for a rematch of last year’s NFC Championship game (which the Vikings lost in overtime) they need to “go down there and hit that town like Katrina.”

This statement was horribly offensive, and Hampton has apologized for it.

But that wasn’t the only offensive statement Hampton made in the broadcast. When talking about the Dallas Cowboys, Hampton said “The Cowboys think they are Clint Eastwood; they’re more of the Brokeback variety if you know what I’m talking about.”

I think we have a pretty good idea of what he’s talking about. Hampton was trying to insult the Cowboys by comparing them to gay people – simple as that.

Hampton wasn’t actually saying the Cowboys players are gay, but by making this comment, Hampton telegraphed to his audience that gay men are not good enough, just as he doesn’t believe the Dallas Cowboys are good enough. Hampton was a tremendous player for the Chicago Bears throughout the 1980s, he’s a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he’s a television personality, and whether he likes it or not, he’s a role model.  Every day, millions of kids across this country are harassed, bullied and beaten because of attitudes like this. Hampton should not be using his platform to encourage homophobia.

Dan Hampton needs to apologize for this offensive and defamatory statement, just as he needed to apologize for his Katrina comment. We will be calling Pro Football Weekly to voice our concerns.

Anti-gay “Zealot” Lou Engle Teams up with Huckabee and Gingrich

With dangerous rhetoric like ”God is an avenger of blood” and “vengeance is mine,” Lou Engle is scheduled to gather thousands of like-minded believers in Sacramento, California, over Labor Day weekend to preach his virulently anti-gay message. Engle’s political connection to Sam Brownback, Senator from Kansas, prompted the Kansas Democratic Party in May 2010 to urge Brownback to denounce his affiliation with Engle because Engle supported Uganda’s proposed law to execute gays. Now Engle has been endorsed by Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee along with a list of top anti-LGBT religious leaders.

What was first billed as a 10-year anniversary for TheCall’s first youth rally on the National Mall, is now being called the kick off for the November elections. This unhealthy alliance of religion and politics is being challenged by California Faith for Equality and the Courage Campaign.

Samuel Chu, Executive Director of California Faith for Equality

“It is not only misguided but reckless to promote a God of vengeance,” said Samuel M. Chu, Executive Director of California Faith for Equality.  ”Religion should never be u

sed as a weapon to condemn, to harm, or to strip away a person’s humanity.” California Faith for Equality (CFE) is an organization of over 6,000 clergy and lay leaders who support equality and justice for all.

“We represent good people of deep faith across the great state of California who know that traditional religious values are love, justice and compassion, not bigotry, discrimination and hatred,” said the Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker, Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento.  “CFE stands with all those working for marriage equality because we believe God blesses all people equally and that Constitution should protect all people equally.”

GLAAD helped Kansas faith leaders expose Lou Engle’s support of Uganda’s “kill the gays” bill.  And when Bishop Christopher Senyonjo from Uganda spoke out against US evangelists like Lou Engle, GLAAD provided media assistance.  GLAAD will continue to shine the light on anti-LGBT religious leaders who undermine our equality.

Massachusetts School Dean Loses Job After Marrying Her Partner

Christine M. Judd was a part of Cathedral High School in Springfield, Massachusetts for 12 years, beginning as a chemistry teacher and working her way up to eventually become the dean of students and athletics director. But since Wednesday, she stopped working for the school  system, as an indirect result of her sexual orientation.

Although marriage for same-sex couples has been legal in her home state since 2004, Judd married her partner of 12 years just this past August. Judd confirms that during a September 1 meeting,  administrators, having learned that she got married, gave her two options: Resign or be terminated.

Cathedral High School is affiliated with and responsive to the Springfield Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church and its doctrine, part of which forbids marriage between same-sex couples. Mark Dupont, a spokesperson for the Diocese, tells The Republican newspaper that employees are expected to follow “the values we believe in and are teaching in these same schools … We must be true to who we are.”

This incident is another example in a a growing list similar cases of church affiliated schools rejecting gay families.  EDGE Boston notes a story from just a few months ago about a child at another Massachusetts school who was denied admission because his parents were both women.

Judd’s contributions to Cathedral High are extensive, going back to 1998. Her biography on Cathedral’s official website boasts of her involvement in various aspects of the school, and describes her as both a disciplinarian and “one of the key members … who serve as positive role models for the students.” An editorial by Scott Coen of MassLive.com discusses his relationship with Judd and his disappointment in the decision, saying she has consistently placed students’ needs above all else.

GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios says that this decision will negatively impact the students, faculty, and city of Springfield, noting that: “Christine M. Judd is a highly respected and devoted educator with a stellar track record of achievement.  She has served her school loyally for the past 12 years, but is no longer welcome, simply because she married her partner, which is legal in Massachusetts.  It is deeply hurtful to see the Diocese of Springfield take such a harsh and unnecessary action, much to the detriment of Cathedral High School, which is losing one of its finest.”

Judd’s loyalty to the school continues even though she is no longer a part of it. “I’m hurt, but I wish nothing but the best for Cathedral, its students, the parents, the athletic teams, administration, and faculty. I bleed purple (the school’s color),” she says. She had hoped her devotion and professionalism would prevent her from having to leave, and wonders if employees who violate other aspects of church doctrine–such as by taking birth control or divorcing without annulment–would suffer the same repercussions. Judd is grateful for the support she has received during this difficult time, but says she will not take legal action against the diocese.

GLAAD will continue closely monitoring media coverage of the story to ensure it is presented fairly and accurately.

LGBT Religion News Roundup – September 3, 2010

This week, kudos go to Lisa Weiner-Mahfuz of Intersections Consulting for her important  Bilerico post where she drew upon her family’s Jewish and Muslim heritage to urge LGBTQ people to stand against rising Islamophobia. And kudos to the Rev. Jane Spahr who was simultaneously praised and convicted by a Presbyterian court for performing marriages for gay couples.  On the other extreme, Newt Gingrich and anti-gay “zealot” Lou Engle are teaming up on Labor Day weekend for a “revival” to muster Republican votes for the mid-term election in November and will broadcast live in Sacramento this Labor Day weekend on God TV to kick off their nationwide campaign.

Lisa Weiner-Mahfuz

Glenn Beck held a revival of his own of sorts at the Lincoln Memorial last week, and commentators question whether Beck is setting himself up as a new leader of the Religious Right.  Sarah Palin spoke to an anti-gay group in Pennsylvania.  Focus on the Family claimed that anti-bullying efforts are actually part of the “gay agenda.”  Westboro Baptist Church protestors were sprayed with pepper spray at a Marine’s funeral in Omaha, and Lauri Lebo traveled to their controversial church compound to examine their First Amendment rights.

Meanwhile, breakaway Lutherans formed a new denomination after the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America voted for more LGBT inclusive policies last year.  In a letter to the editor, Jennifer Leiser reminded readers of the Salt Lake Tribune that most people are staying even if they disagree; the ELCA is far from breaking apart.

The Washington Post looked at rising GOP support for marriage equality and fact-checked a political flyer that accuses New York and San Francisco “gay activists” of funneling money into Washington D.C. campaigns.  Ironically, the flyer is funded by NOM, a national organization outside of D.C.  Jonathan Merritt asked whether Prop 8 is the culture war’s last stand, and Candace Chellew-Hodge wondered if the Religious Right is weakening on marriage equality.

It might be weakening, but it is not gone.  Maia Spots investigated how states are embracing or evading marriage equality and found that getting married to your same-sex partner is a criminal offense in Wisconsin with a $10,000 fine or 9-month jail sentence!  A conservative Christian legal group is now in court trying to compel Governor Schwarzenegger and other officials to defend Proposition 8.  A Texas court decided that gay couples can’t divorce in Texas.  Florida governor and senate hopeful Charlie Crist said he supports a constitutional ban on marriage for same-sex couples but later said he meant that to apply just to Florida.

Internationally, Religion in the News reported on Uganda’s Anglicans, and Jeff Sharlet continued his important investigative work on the proposed “anti-homosexuality” legislation in Uganda with a stirring piece in Harper’s.  In England, gay advocate Peter Tatchell received a standing ovation at a Christian festival where an attempted boycott by the religious right actually fueled ticket sales. Friends and family of victims of the Tel Aviv gay center shootings were invited to Germany to speak against homophobia. In Mexico, the BBC examined how the Catholic Church has fanned the flames of a dispute over gay rights. Australia’s most populous state voted to allow gay people to adopt.  In New Zealand, Exodus Ministries, an “ex-gay” program based in the USA was denied charity status since it performs “no public benefit.”  In the U.K., a Catholic archbishop’s aide called Britain a “hedonistic wasteland” due to its embrace of LGBT people.  Gay Catholics in England debated strategies over the Pope’s upcoming visit.

Media Responsibly Addresses Bullying Scourge, Focus on the Family’s Claims

It’s back-to-school time in America, but for millions of kids, there’s more at stake than just studying hard and getting good grades. According to various studies, between a third and two thirds of all students across the country are victims of bullying. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, (GLSEN) says that for LGBT kids, that number jumps to 90 percent.

For the coming school year, GLSEN sent a 24-page booklet, titled “Just the Facts About Sexual Orientation and Youth,” to 16,000 U.S. public school superintendents. And earlier this month, the US House introduced the Safe Schools Improvement Act in order to combat the devastating toll bullying can take on students.

But the Colorado-based, anti-gay group, Focus on the Family now claims the booklet and the Safe Schools Act are a Trojan horse of sorts, trying to sneak what they call a “gay agenda” into schools under the guise of preventing bullying. Thankfully, many in the media are doing their homework.

The Denver Post interviewed GLSEN executive director Eliza Byard, who said the booklet was written by a coalition of 18 medical, mental-health and education organizations, and that GLSEN has been working with Christian Educators Association International and the First Amendment Center to write common-ground guidelines on dealing with sexual orientation in schools. She told the Post “The word ‘f****t’ is not part of any religious creed.”

CNN’s Anderson Cooper also took an in-depth look at the issue on Wednesday, in a segment featuring Byard, author and bullying expert Rosalind Wiseman, and Candi Cushman from Focus on the Family. Byard told Cooper that science has shown that if you don’t specifically mention sexual orientation and gender identity in bullying prevention efforts, they don’t do anything to protect students who are, or are perceived to be, LGBT.  Wiseman agreed, saying the issue is “about everybody in the school feeling that they have the right to speak out. And if we don’t name this behavior, then we are going to lose it, and it’s going to go back to bullying in the playground is the problem, and we’re going to lose all of the improvements that we have made.”

ABC News spoke with a parent, whose son committed suicide in 1998 after he was forced to endure constant bullying. Brenda High told the network: “I am a Christian. I am conservative. Some would call me right-wing.” But, she said, “The problem is our schools are not teaching kids to become responsible adults. When you allow kids to call people names or bash them because they think they might be gay and make assumptions and judge people, that’s when kids get hurt.

Earlier this year, an Iowa State University study on cyber-bullying found that the best way to prevent homophobic and transphobic behavior is to explicitly state that that type of bullying will not be tolerated. “We should find ways on our campuses to empower young people to speak up and act as allies,” said study author Warren Blumenfeld.  ”In bullying circles, it’s empowering the bystander to become the upstander to help eliminate the problem.”

GLAAD applauds those in the media who continue to shine a spotlight on the devastation of  bullying and the science that shows the only way to prevent the problem is to address the issue head-on.
